NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The #8 ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team traveled to Northfield this afternoon to take on the Oles from St. Olaf in a MIAC battle. Unfortunately for the Saints, the Oles jumped out to a 3-0 lead, while the Saints were only able to find the back of the net twice, as St. Olaf came away with a 4-2 victory over CSS today.
How it Happened
After the Oles offense came out firing, including making Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) record 21 saves in the first period, St. Olaf broke through in the late minutes of the opening period, scoring twice in a span of nine seconds, to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Saints were unable to record a shot on goal in the first period.
The Oles continued its fiery start, scoring a little over a minute into the second period, as the Saints now faced a 3-0 deficit.
CSS put an end to the Oles momentum minutes later, as Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) notched his second goal of the season, assisted by Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) and Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS), to cut into the deficit trailing 3-1.
Later in the period, Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) was able to score his eighth goal of the season, with an assist going to Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), as the Saints now sat just down one goal, trailing the Oles 3-2.
The Saints got a number of shots on goal in the later moments of the second period, but the score remained 3-2 heading into the final period.
Rissanen showed up for the Saints in the opening minutes of the third period, recording six saves to keep the score at 3-2.
After the Saints penalty kill made a great effort to keep the score at 3-2, the Saints offense continued to pepper the Oles goaltender, but the Saints still trailed 3-2.
After the Saints pulled its goalie in an attempt to tie the game with an extra attacker, the Oles iced the game with an empty net goal, coming away with a 4-2 victory over CSS today.
