RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team captured its 12th victory of the season tonight, defeating the Falcons from UW-River Falls in a highly contested road matchup. After the Falcons took a 1-0 lead into the second period, the Saints scored two unanswered goals to take tonight's game by a score of 2-1.
How it Happened
Both teams traded shots early, with neither team being able to break the 0-0 tie. The Falcons however, would be able to strike first 12 and a half minutes into the opening period to take a 1-0 lead.
Jumping into the second period, despite the fact the Saints were handed a two-minute minor penalty, the penalty kill showed up big time, as Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) was able to notch his ninth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
Although the Saints outshot UW-River Falls 12-5 in the second period, they were unable to mount any more goals in the period after the shorthanded goal, as the score remained at 1-1 heading into the final period.
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) made the start in net for St. Scholastica tonight, and early in the third period, the freshman made a number of big saves to keep the score at 1-1.
In the late stages of the third period, with the score still knotted at 1-1, Richels was able to find the back of the net for the second time of the game and his tenth goal of the season, with assists going to Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya), to give CSS a crucial 2-1 lead.
The Falcons tried its best to find a way to get even and tie the game at 2-2, but the Saints defense was having no part of that tonight, as St. Scholastica collected its 12th victory of the season, defeating the Falcons by a score of 2-1.
