EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The #6 ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team took on the #12 ranked Blugolds from Wisconsin-Eau Claire tonight in a battle of two highly ranked teams. The Saints struck first, but the Blugolds were able to score two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead through two periods. After the Saints were able to tie the game at 2-2, Wisconsin-Eau Claire scored three unanswered goals to take tonight's match by a score of 5-2.
How it Happened
The Saints offense came out firing early in the first period, getting a number of opportunities to score but nothing came of it.
Eight minutes into the period, the Saints offense broke through and took the early lead when Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS) scored his sixth goal of the season, with an assist going to Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) to give CSS a 1-0 lead.
The Saints were able to take a 1-0 lead after the first period, with Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) making all 10 saves that came his way.
The Blugolds were able to respond to its deficit by scoring an early goal in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.
With just around six minutes to play in the second period, the Blugolds took its first lead of the evening, taking a 2-1 lead into the second intermission as well.
St. Scholastica was able to put together a great shift just three minutes into the third period, when Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) scored his 11th goal of the campaign, assisted by Braeden Holcomb (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum) to tie the game at 2-2.
Just minutes later however, Wisconsin-Eau Claire broke through to score its third goal of the night, taking a 3-2 lead over CSS.
After the Saints were handed a minor penalty, the Blugolds pounced on the opportunity and scored on the powerplay, extending its lead to 4-2.
The Saints desperately needed to try to respond with a goal of its own, but another Blugolds goal iced the game, as Wisconsin-Eau Claire defeated St. Scholastica tonight with a 5-2 victory.
Back at Home
The Saints (12-3-0, 5-1-0) will be back at home for its next matchup, where they will take on the Oles from St. Olaf at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
