WINONA, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team captured its first conference victory of the season this afternoon, taking on the Scots from Macalester. The Saints captured an 8-4 victory in game one of the afternoon, as CSS tallied 10 hits, but fell in the second game of the day, as the Scots defeated CSS by a score of 10-5.
Game One
The Saints struck first in the first game of the day, as
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) ripped an RBI single that scored
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), who had reached on a Scots error, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Macalester responded in its half of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits, all while taking the lead over CSS.
Novak and
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) both recorded singles to open the top of the third inning. Both would then score on the ensuing at-bat when Schelonka doubled, making the score 3-2. After an
Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) single,
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) hit a three-run home run, extending CSS' lead to 6-2.
The score remained at 6-2 through the next two innings, until the bottom of the fifth inning, where Macalester scored two runs on an RBI double, cutting CSS' lead to 6-4.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Saints scored two runs on a
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) single, giving itself an 8-4 lead where they would hold on to defeat Macalester in the next half inning.
Game Two
Just as CSS scored in the first inning of the first game, Schelonka recorded another first inning RBI single, as CSS took an early 1-0 lead.
Macalester scored in a big way in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs on six hits, to take a 6-1 lead over the Saints.
Macalester added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, headlined a two-run home run, which extended the Scots lead to 8-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Saints got a run with one out on a triple by
Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)), followed up with a Scots error that scored Garlick, as CSS trailed now 8-3.
The Scots drew another run in the bottom of the fifth, as they extended its lead to 9-3.
Garlick scored another run for CSS in its half of the seventh inning, as Garlick recorded a leadoff single in the inning, but the Saints still trailed 9-4.
After the Scots scored another run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 10-4, Garlick led off the inning with his second triple of the game and would then score on a wild pitch. However, the Saints could not mutter anything else as Macalester defeated CSS in game two by a score of 10-5.

The Saints (3-14, 1-3 MIAC) will be back in action next on Monday, where they will travel to Arden Hills to take on the Royals from Bethel in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
