ARDEN HILLS, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader this weekend against the Royals from Bethel. Bethel defeated CSS in the first game of the day by a score of 7-1 and rode a strong pitching performance by the Royals to a 5-0 victory in game two.
Game One
Bethel scored the first runs of the first game of the afternoon in the bottom of the second inning, tallying two runs on three hits, taking an early 2-0 lead in the process.
CSS put two men on early in the top of the third as
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) and
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) both reached base, but nothing came of it, as the Saints still trailed 2-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Royals added two more runs to their total, expanding their lead to 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Saints got some early momentum, as
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) singled and
Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) reached base via a hit by pitch. Tiemann then stepped up to the plate with two outs and delivered an RBI single that scored Schelonka and made the score now 4-1.
Bethel responded quickly in the next half inning, adding three runs on three hits, taking a 7-1 lead, a lead that they would hold, as Bethel defeated CSS in game one by a score of 7-1.
Game Two
The Royals took an early lead in the second game of the day, scoring an early run on a sacrifice fly, as the Royals led 1-0.
Schelonka was handed the ball for the start in the second game and had a strong bottom of the second inning, striking out two Royals batters in a one-two-three inning.
The Royals added another run in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run, to expand its lead to 2-0.
The score remained at 2-0 through the top of the sixth inning, as both teams' bats were held in check. In the bottom of the sixth, the Royals broke through with a two-run inning, to expand its lead to 4-0.
Bethel added one more run in the bottom of the eighth, as CSS was only able to mutter three hits in the second contest of the day and defeated the Saints by a score of 5-0.

The Saints (3-16, 1-5 MIAC) will be back in action next on Wednesday, where they will host their first home game of the season at Wade Stadium, taking on the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
