Saints Shut Out Gustavus in Game One of Double Header

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – On Saturday (4/29) St. Scholastica split with Gustavus Adolphus College. In the first game the Saints won 3-0 and lost 9-3 in the second game.

CSS 3, Gustavus 0
The Saints shut down Gustavus in the top of the first inning and took the lead 1-0 at the bottom of the inning. After a double to right field, Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) scored off a single to left field from Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS). CSS took a 2-0 lead over GAC in the third inning when Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) hit a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Paniagua. The third and final run scored for the Saints was in the fourth inning. Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the inning started with a double to right center. Once Laviano advanced to third by a sacrifice bunt by Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), Natalie Roehl (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) was subbed in to pinch run. Roehl then scored the third and final run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field by Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). The Saints shut down Gustavus for the remainder of the game and ended with a 3-0 shutout.  

At the plate for CSS, Bolin went 3-3. In the circle, Ashley Matejka (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.

It remained a 0-0 game after the first inning, but Gustavus took the lead 1-0 in the second. It was just a 1-0 game until the fourth inning when GAC put up another two runs giving them a 3-0 lead. Going into the top of the 7th, the Saints were still only down 3-0. With one out and one run scored in the inning, Matejka came in to pitch for Savannah Romero (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS (Bethel)). By the end of the top of the 7th the Saints were down 9-0. However, they were able to prevent a shutout as they put up three runs in the bottom of the inning. Rosenthal got the inning started with a single to right field. Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)) then came in to pinch run for Reosnethal. Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) came up and doubled down the third base line and advanced Gladitsch to third. Then, Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) came up and singled to center field, scoring Gladitsch, their first run of the game as well as advanced Lang to third. Emma Stanoch (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) came in to pinch hit for Blumenthal and had a sacrifice fly to center field and scored Lang. Once Hadlich reached second base, Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) came in to pinch run and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to the infield by Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) which brought the final score to 9-3. 

At the plate for CSS the six hits were hit by six different players. Romero pitched for the Saints for 6.1 innings and had three strikeouts and Matejka pitched the remaining 0.2 innings. 

Up Next 
The Saints (15-15, MIAC 5-9) will be in St. Paul on Tuesday the 2nd to face Augsburg in their rescheduled game from April 11th. Game times are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
