Baseball Splits Back-and-Forth Doubleheader Versus St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split its doubleheader against St. Olaf today, combining for 18 runs and 32 hits between both games. The Saints fell just short of a comeback win in the second game, but the Oles walked it off in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Game One: CSS 6, STO 3
The Oles scored first in the opening innings of game one, scoring a run in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead.
 
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) notched a two-out single to left and was driven in two batters later when Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
 
After Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) retired the Oles in order in the bottom of the second, he led off the top of the third with a leadoff walk. After the Saints got two runners in scoring position, Schelonka scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)) as the Saints now led 2-1.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Schelonka singled with one out in the inning and Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) then tripled to right field with two outs, extending the Saints' lead to 3-1. Garlick then singled on the next at-bat, driving in Happajoki, to give CSS a 4-1 lead.
 
The Oles responded in its half of the fifth inning, bringing two men across on two hits, cutting its deficit to 4-3.
 
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) got the Saints' offense started in the top of the sixth, doubling down the left field line, to put a man in scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) singled up the middle, scoring Schemenauer, to give CSS a cushion, as they now led the Oles by a score of 5-3.
 
The Saints collected another run in the top of the seventh inning, as Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) hit a home run to give CSS a 6-3 lead.
 
Schelonka was able to shut down the Oles in the seventh to take game one by a score of 6-3.
 
Game Two: STO 13, CSS 12
Schelonka doubled with two outs in the top of the first, then scored on an RBI single on an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
St. Olaf matched the Saints in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Stubbles and Schelonka both reached base to lead off the top of the third, and the Saints got another run on an RBI from Harris to take a 2-1 lead. The Saints were able to put three more runs on the board with an RBI by Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) and a two-RBI double by Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) to extend its lead to 5-1.
 
In the next inning, Novak and Stubbles hit back-to-back doubles, to extend CSS' lead to 6-1. On the next at-bat, Schelonka picked up an RBI on a single, as CSS now led 7-1.
 
After Matt Forrest (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) was able to retire the Oles in the bottom of the fourth, the Saints got another run on an RBI single from Stubbles, extending the lead to 8-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Oles scored four runs in the inning, to cut the Saints lead to 8-5.
 
After the Saints scored a run on an Oles error in the top of the seventh, St. Olaf took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits, to take a 10-9 lead.
 
The Oles added two runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a solo home run, to give itself a 12-9 lead over the Saints.
 
The Saints responded in the top of the ninth, as Schelonka and Harris hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 12-12 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
 
The Oles were able to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth, defeating CSS by a score of 13-12.

The Saints (6-21, 4-10) will hit the field next on Tuesday, where they will travel to Collegeville to take on St. John's. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
