DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – On Wednesday, St. Scholastica swept Carleton College 3-1 in the first game and 6-5 in the second game.

CSS 3, Carleton 1
Starting in the first inning, Carleton took the lead over the Saints 1-0. After Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) got walked in the bottom of the third, she eventually scored off an RBI single by Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and tied up the game 1-1. It then remained a tie game until the bottom of the seventh inning. Dail started the inning off with a walk. With one out, Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) went up to the plate and hit a walk-off home run to secure the first win of the day for the Saints 3-1.

At the plate for CSS, Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) went 2-3. In the circle, Ashley Matejka (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS) pitched for the Saints and had five strikeouts.

CSS 6, Carleton 5
In the second game, Carleton scored in the first inning just as they did in game one. However, this time CSS was able to tie it up in the bottom inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Dail started things off with a walk. Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) then came up to the plate and singled with a bunt and advanced Dail to third and then scored when Carleton attempted to catch Bolin stealing. Carleton came back in the second inning and put up another three runs on the Saints. However, in the bottom half of the inning CSS bounced back and put up four more on the board and brought the score to 5-4. In the bottom of the second Rosenthal started things off by getting on base with a walk and Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) came in as a pinch runner. Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) singled through the left side and advanced Bussey to second. Bussey scored the first run of the inning off an RBI by Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). Dail was walked yet again in the bottom of the second inning which was followed by an RBI single from Bolin scoring Lang. Paniagua brought Dail and Bolin with an RBI single.

The Saints scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third when Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) doubled down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Rosenthal. Carleton attempted to come back, and even put up one more run, but Scholastica was able to hold them and finish the game with a 6-5 win.
