Baseball Struggles in Home Opener Versus Concordia-Moorhead

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In its first home game of the season, the St. Scholastica baseball team took on the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead. Unfortunately, the Cobbers got the best of the Saints in both games of the doubleheader, winning game one by a score of 13-2, and game two by a score of 14-5.
 
Game One
The Cobbers struck first in game one, tallying an RBI single that gave Concordia-Moorhead an early 1-0 lead.
 
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) led off the bottom of the third with a single up the middle, followed by a single by Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) two batters later. After a Saints double steal, Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) singled to left, scoring both Novak and Schelonka, giving CSS a 2-1 lead after three innings.
 
Concordia-Moorhead wasted no time getting its run back, as the Cobbers hit consecutive doubles, one being an RBI double, to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The Cobbers took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, brining across two runs on two hits to now lead 4-2 over CSS.
 
After a one-two-three bottom of the fifth for the Saints, Concordia-Moorhead broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning, scoring seven runs on six hits, while batting around the order, to now lead 11-2.
 
The Cobbers scored two more in the top of the seventh to take a 13-2 lead, a lead that would stand as Concordia-Moorhead took game one by a score of 13-2.
 
Game Two
Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) was given the start for game two, and he got off to an early start, striking out two batters early in the top of the first.
 
The Saints found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning. After a double by Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) drove him in on an RBI single to pick up the junior's first hit and RBI of the season.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Concordia-Moorhead claimed the lead, as the Cobbers scored three runs on four hits, to take a 3-1 lead over CSS.
 
The Saints got a pair of baserunners on in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) and Tiemann both singled to lead off the inning. With two outs in the inning, Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) hit an RBI single that scored Tiemann and cut the Saints' deficit to 3-2.
 
The Cobbers added another run in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch to reclaim its two-run lead over CSS.
 
After the Saints went down one-two-three in its half of the sixth inning, Concordia-Moorhead broke the game open in the top of the seventh. The Cobbers scored four runs on four hits in the inning, to now lead 8-2.
 
CSS responded in the bottom of the seventh inning, after Schemenauer and Novak both reached base, Schelonka hit a base-clearing triple that scored them both as the score now sat at 8-4. The Saints were not done however, as Harris drove in Schelonka on a groundout to make the score now 8-5.
 
The score remained at 8-5 until the top of the ninth, where the Cobbers extended its lead. Concordia-Moorhead scored six runs in the top of the ninth, to make the score 14-5, which is where the score remained as the Cobbers took game two by a score of 14-5.
 
Up Next
The Saints (3-18, 1-7 MIAC) will hit the field next on Saturday, where they will host the Auggies from Augsburg at Wade Stadium in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
