DULUTH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – Behind strong starting pitching and a dominant offensive showing, the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties were able to beat the St. Scholastica baseball team today in a doubleheader. CSS' offense was held to just two runs across both games, as the Gusties marched on to 7-0 and 10-2 victories.
Game One: GAC 7, CSS 0
The Gusties notched the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs in the inning on two hits, to take a 2-0 lead over CSS.
After a leadoff single in the top of the fifth for Gustavus, a two-run home run extended its lead over the Saints, leading now by a score of 4-0.
The Saints' offense struggled in game one today, only muttering two hits in the game, while the Gusties added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, giving itself a 7-0 lead, a lead they would hold on to as CSS fell in game number one.
Game Two: GAC 10, CSS 2
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) was given the start for game two, and the junior was able to notch three strikeouts through the first three innings as the game remained scoreless.
Gustavus struck first in the second game, getting a run on an RBI single in the top of the fifth, as the Gusties led 1-0.
Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) got the Saints going in the bottom of the fifth inning, and on the next at-bat
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) hit a towering flyball that managed to get over the left field fence for a two-run home run, giving CSS a 2-1 lead over the Gusties.
After the Saints were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth, Gustavus reclaimed its lead in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on three hits, to now lead 3-2.
In the following inning, Gustavus added three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run, to give the Gusties a 6-2 lead over the Saints.
The bats for the Gusties weren't done just yet, adding four runs in the top of the ninth, taking a 10-2 lead that they would not lose, as the Saints fell in game two.

The Saints (3-20, 1-9 MIAC) will be back in action on Saturday, where they will host the Knights from Carleton at Wade Stadium in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00.
