AUBURNDALE, Fla.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team fell this morning against The Storm from Simpson College (IA). Simpson scored six of its eight runs in the first inning, providing itself a comfortable lead over CSS and defeated the Saints by a score of 8-2.
How it Happened
Simpson took an early lead in this matchup, scoring six runs in the first inning, headlined by a three-run home run, as The Storm took an early 6-0 lead.
Joe Tiemann collected CSS' first hit of the game with a leadoff single in the top of the second inning, but unfortunately, nothing came from it.
The Saints were only able to collect two base hits in the third through fifth innings, as
Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)) and
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) both notched singles, as CSS still trailed 6-0.
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) led off the top of the sixth inning with a walk, and after
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) was hit by a pitch, CSS had two runners on with no outs. The Saints would later score its first run of the game, as Tiemann drove in Novak on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Simpson College extended its lead, scoring two runs on two hits, while taking a commanding 8-1 lead.
CSS would score its final run of the game on a solo home run by Garlick, as the Saints fell in this one, by a score of 8-2.
