Saints capture first win in dominating fashion

DAVENPORT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – After falling in its first game of the day, against William Patterson University, the St. Scholastica baseball team rebounded with its first victory of the young season, defeating Mount Saint Mary College (NY). Behind dominant pitching and an incredible offensive performance, the Saints were able to take care of the Knight in just seven innings, winning by a score of 15-0.
 
Game One
In game one of the day against William Patterson University, the Saints struck first in the bottom of the first. It started with a leadoff single by Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), and the Saints caught a break later in the inning, as Novak scored the first run of the game on a dropped third strike, taking an early 1-0 lead.
 
In the top of the second inning, starting pitcher Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) struck out two Knights batters, on route to a one-two-three inning.
 
In the top of the third inning, William Patterson got itself on the scoreboard, scoring two runs on two hits in the inning, taking a 2-1 lead in the process.
 
The Saints responded in its half of the third inning, as Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) got on base with a one-out walk, followed by a single by Schelonka, putting two men on with just one out. After a wild pitch that advanced both runners up a base, Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) drove in Schemenauer on a sacrifice-fly, tying the game at 2-2.
 
William Patterson began to break the game open in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring seven runs on 10 hits, five of which were extra-base hits, taking a 9-2 lead over CSS.
 
The Pioneers' offense wasn't done yet, adding to its lead in the sixth inning, as CSS now trailed by a score of 12-2.
 
St. Scholastica responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, led off by a Payton Jeffries (Vancouver, Wash./Union HS (Shasta College)) walk, which was followed with a single by Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)), with two outs in the inning. Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)) came to the plate and delivered a two-out double to right center field that scored Jeffries and Haapajoki, making the score 12-4.
 
William Patterson added two more runs in the seventh inning, and ultimately held CSS in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with a 14-4 victory over CSS.
 
Game Two
CSS struck early in game two of the day, as Novak once again led off the game with a leadoff single, and after stealing third, Schelonka was able to score Novak on a sacrifice-fly. Moments later Schemenauer drew a walk and Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) got on with a single, which brought up Andrew Rott (St. Augusta, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS), who laced a double that scored two, as CSS lead 3-0 after its half of the first inning.
 
Grant Taival (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) was handed the ball for the Saints in game two, and in his first inning of action, struck out two Knights batters, keeping the score at 3-0.
 
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) led off the top of the second with a double, which was his first extra-base hit of the season. Novak then singled on the next at-bat, and Larson later scored on Novak's second stolen base of the ballgame. Novak would later score in the inning on an error, as CSS led 5-0.
 
Taival remained dominant in the bottom of the second inning, striking out another Knights batter, while not allowing a baserunner.
 
The Saints led off the top of the third inning with three consecutive batters reaching base, as Haapajoki singled left, Garlick drew a walk, and freshman Mason Boos (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Marshall HS) recorded his first collegiate base hit on an infield bunt. CSS scored another run when Novak was hit by a pitch and added another run when Schemenauer singled, scoring Garlick.
 
With still only one out in the inning, Schelonka hit a single up the middle, scoring Boos and Novak, as CSS led 9-0. The Saints played long-ball just a few batters later, as Rott hit his first home run of the season, as the Saints took a commanding 12-0 lead. St. Scholastica wasn't done just yet in the inning, as another runner would cross the plate on a wild pitch, leading now 13-0.
 
After another scoreless inning by the Knights in the bottom of the third, CSS added another run in the top of the fourth. Larson and Novak both reached base on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning, which brought up Schemenauer, who doubled to left field that scored Larson.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the Knights got a baserunner on with a walk. After a fielders choice that put one out on the board for the inning, the Saints turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning, still leading 15-0.
 
After five dominant innings by Taival, which ended with him not allowing a hit and walking just two batters, Joe Talmage (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) came in for his season debut. Talmage got his first strikeout of the season, and after a single that ended the combined no-hitter, the Saints got out of the inning.
 
The Saints held on in the top of the seventh inning, ending the game with a 15-0 dominant outing over the Knights.

The Saints (1-8) will hit the field next tomorrow, where they will take on Simpson College. First pitch is slated for 9:00 a.m. (EST)
