AUBURNDALE, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team fell in its first game of a seven-game trip in Florida. Taking on Central College (IA), the Saints trailed early in this matchup, only to make a remarkable comeback and tying the game in the eighth inning. The Dutch, however, took a lead in the ninth, and closed out the game, with a 13-7 defeat over CSS.
How it Happened
Central took an early lead in this one, scoring an early run in the first inning, to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Dutch expanded on its lead. Central College scored six runs on six hits, including a three-run home run, to take a 7-0 lead.
The Saints offense was held in check through the middle innings, muttering just one hits, a double by
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS), as the score remained 7-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Saints kickstarted the bottom of the sixth inning in fashion, as
Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)), and was driven in on an RBI single by Schelonka. Schelonka then stole second and
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) walked, to put two men on for the Saints. Schelonka scored later on an error, and Harris scored on an RBI single by Peyton Jeffries, as the Saints trailed 7-3.
The score remained at 7-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) started off the eighth inning for CSS with a ground-rule double, and Jeffries singled on the next at-bat, putting two men on for the Saints. On the ensuing at-bat,
Andrew Rott (St. Augusta, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) singled, driving in Schemenauer in the process.
After the RBI single,
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit an RBI double that scored Jeffries and made the score 7-5. With two outs, Harris delivered for the Saints, cranking an RBI single that tied the game at 7-7.
After the big inning for the Saints, the Dutch responded in a big way, scoring six runs on six hits, that gave Central College a 13-7 lead and it would be a lead they would hold, as CSS fell in today's matchup.
