DULUTH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team secured the victory tonight, in a thrilling conference matchup against the Pipers from Hamline. Trailing by two points at halftime, the Saints etched its way back in today's matchup, defeating Hamline by a score of 63-60.
First Half
Three different players scored for CSS to start off the evening, as
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) and
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) both got jumpers to fall, followed by a
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) three-pointer, gave CSS a 7-3 lead.
After the Pipers took a 10-7 lead, Winesett converted an and-one, tying the game at 10-10.
Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North High School (Dakota County Technical College)) and
Mohamed Washington (Silver Spring, MD/Hibbing Community College) scored their first points of the night, with right around nine minutes to play in the half, as the Saints took a 15-12 lead in the process.
With six munutes to play, Yohanes Gebeyehu hit a big three-pointer, followed up minutes later with Carlson hitting a pair of layups, reclaiming its lead.
The Pipers went on a 9-4 run to end the half, leading 29-27 at halftime.
Second Half
The Saints opened up the half swinging, wasting no time reclaiming its lead, as
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), Winesett, and Carlson got jumpers to go.
Winesett hit another three-pointer moments later, which Hendrickson followed up with a layup of his own, to give CSS a five-point cushion.
While the Pipers took back the lead, Carlson scored on three of the next four Saints possessions, cutting the Saints' deficit to just one-point.
With nine minutes to play, Washington scored on a three-pointer, then assisted on a Ojullu layup, as CSS trailed 58-55.
Following a Hendrickson jumper, Washington forced a steal, then scored on a slam dunk on the offensive end, taking a 61-60 lead.
The Saints closed out the Pipers tonight with free throws by Carlson and a great defensive stop in the closing seconds, defeating Hamline by a score of 63-60.
Top Performers
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) led CSS in scoring and was chairmen of the boards tonight, as he recorded 17 points while claiming 10 rebounds.
Mohamed Washington (Silver Spring, MD/Hibbing Community College) played a huge role off the bench tonight, scoring 13 points while also recording two steals.
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added 11 points tonight, while shooting 2-3 from beyond-the-arc.
