Second Half Comeback for Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short Versus Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell just short this afternoon, as a big second half comeback fell just short. The Saints trailed by 13 at half, but were able to cut the lead, as CSS fell today by a score of 57-54.
 
First Half
The Saints took an early lead with a three-pointer by Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), as Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) was credited with the assist, taking a 3-2 lead in the process.
 
The Cardinals regained the lead before the Saints scored its next field goal, with a layup by Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) around the 12-minute mark, trailing the Cardinals 13-8.
 
Minutes later, Thomas got another jumper to go, making the score 20-10.
 
The Cardinals led by as much as 16, when Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Carlson got three-pointers to fall, trailing 31-18 at halftime.
 
Second Half
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got himself going early in the second half, scoring on both a layup and a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to 10 points.
 
Moments later, Winesett and Moore both hit three-pointers, making the score 32-27.
 
After layups by Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Winesett, Moore got another three to fall, as CSS reclaimed the lead, as they now led 34-32.
 
Around the 11-minute mark in the half, Thomas got a layup to fall, which made the score 43-36, after Saint Mary's took the lead back.
 
After Carlson converted an and-one, CSS trailed by just one point.
 
The Saints trailed 55-54 after layups by Moore and Thomas, which was followed by a layup by Winesett on the next possession, but CSS still trailed by one.
 
The Saints had a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, after the Cardinals took a three-point lead, but ultimately fell today by a score of 57-54.

The Saints (6-15, 5-11 MIAC) will be back in action next on Wednesday, where they will host the Pipers from Hamline as Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
