WESTFIELD, Ind. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team dropped its second game of the day, and the second game of the Crossover Series, after a hard-fought matchup against Mount Union (OH). The Saints faced an early deficit, and fell just short, falling by a score of 3-1.

How it Happened
Grant Taival (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the nod in today's matchup and got going early, striking out a batter in the first inning.

After an one-two-three bottom half of the inning for CSS, the Saints' defense made a stellar play, turning a 4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Purple Raiders got a baserunner on base via a Saints error, which ultimately led to Mount Union scoring two runs in the inning.

The Saints got its first hit in the bottom of the third, as Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)) hit a triple to right field, but nothing came of it, as Mount Union still led 2-0 after three innings.

Taival had a very clean top of the fourth inning, getting a Purple Raider to strike out and getting the other two to groundout.

The score remined the same until the sixth inning, when Mount Union extended its lead, scoring one run on three hits in the inning, as CSS trailed now 3-0.

Garlick opened up the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk and would later score, as Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) hit a single up the middle, to put CSS on the scoreboard, trailing now 3-1.

The Saints pitching staff did a fine job to help give itself a chance to make a late push, led by Matt Forrest (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), but the Saints' bats were held silent, as Mount Union defeated CSS, by a score of 3-1.
