SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team played its first game in three weeks and was able to come away with a 5-2 victory tonight over the University of Dubuque. The Saints jumped out to an early lead, and after the Spartans tied the game at 1-1, CSS was able to come away with the victory, highlighted with three third period goals taking a 5-2 defeat of Dubuque.
How it Happened
It didn't take the Saints long to break the 0-0 tie, as Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) scored his third goal of the season, coming on assists from Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) and Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya), to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans were able to tie the game at 1-1 just five minutes later, midway through the opening period.
CSS had a handful of opportunities to take the lead throughout the rest of the period, but were unable to net another goal. On the defensive end, the Saints were helped with blocked shots from Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) and Matej Palfy (Kosice, Slovakia/Gymnasium Trebisovska), while also being helped with nice saves from Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars).
For most of the second period, the teams went back-and-forth, with neither team able to break the 1-1 tie. That changed in the late minutes of the period, when F. Ledenkov found the back of the net for the second time, with an assist going to Richels.
Moments after Dubuque tied the score at 2-2 in the early stages of the third period, Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) responded with a goal of his own, assisted by Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS) and Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), as CSS took a 3-2 lead.
Later in the period, A. Ledenkov jumped on the bandwagon, scoring his seventh goal of the season on the powerplay, with assists going to F. Ledenkov and Danylo Sukonos, to extend its lead to 4-2.
Richels scored the final goal of the night on an empty net goal in the closing seconds, as A. Ledenkov picked up his third point of the night with an assist, as CSS came away with a 5-2 victory over the Spartans.
