How it Happened
The majority of the first period was headlined by strong goalie play from Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS), as the senior goalie was able to save all seven shots he faced from the Yellowjackets.
Late in the first period, the Saints were able to take advantage of a Yellowjackets penalty, as Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS) scored his fourth goal of the season, with assists going to Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), as the Saints took an early 1-0 lead.
In the early moments of the second period, after the Saints killed off a penalty kill, the Yellowjackets were able to tie the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the second period.
For the remainder of the second period, both teams showed strong defensive performances, as CSS was able to get blocks from Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), and Jack Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS). However, the score remained 1-1 heading into the third period.
St. Scholastica wasted no time getting started in the third period, as Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS) scored his sixth goal of the campaign, assisted by Adrian and Lanigan, to give the Saints a 2-1 lead over UW-Superior.
However, the lead didn't last for long, as the Yellowjackets scored just a little over two minutes later, tying the game at 2-2 in the crucial moments of the game.
In the late moments of the third period, both teams stood strong, as neither team was able to take the lead, as the game headed to overtime with the score at 2-2.
Despite the fact that CSS was able to get a pair of shots off, the Yellowjackets scored the game-winning goal two minutes into the overtime period, handing CSS its first loss of the season, coming away with a 3-2 victory.
