DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team hosted the Scots from Macalester this afternoon at Reif Gymnasium. Both teams went back-and-forth in the first half, combining for 20 three-pointers made, as Maclaester took a four-point lead into halftime. In the second half, the Scots began to pull away in the back half of the second half, as the Scots were able to defeat CSS today by a score of 99-86.
From the Hardwood
For the Saints, Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) and Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) scored the first eight points for CSS, as the duo helped keep the Saints within striking distance early, trailing 11-8.
Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) tied the game at 13-13 moments later on a three-pointer, followed by a three-pointer by Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to give the Saints a 18-16 lead over the Scots.
Winesett would score on a jumper on the ensuing possession for CSS and a few possessions later, Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) would get their names into the scoreboard, as the pair both recorded layups, extending CSS lead to 24-19.
The Saints would see its lead grow to nine, thanks to a three-pointer from Nelson, Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) scoring a fastbreak layup, and Thomas hitting a mid range jumper, as CSS led 31-22.
The Scots would go on an 8-0 run in the span of a minute to bring the game 31-30. Washington would end the drought for the Saints with a layup and three-pointer that gave CSS a 36-32 lead.
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) would earn his first points with seven minutes to play in the half, keeping CSS ahead, leading 38-33.
Although Crockett Jr. and Keykal would get layups to fall, Macalester was able to regain the lead, taking an eight-point lead over the Saints with four minutes to play.
A pair of three-pointers from Moore and Thomas helped bring the Saints closer, as the deficit was down to 56-48.
Crockett Jr. got the last laugh before the end of the first half, draining a three-pointer, as the Saints trailed the Scots at halftime by a score of 56-52.
Winesett scored the Saints first seven points of the second half, but the Scots still held a two-point lead over St. Scholastica.
A jumper by Moore and a trip to the free throw line by Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) would give CSS its lead back, holding a 62-61 lead over the Scots.
Raymond scored his first field goal of the night on a slam dunk after Macalester had regained its lead, as the Saints trailed 73-67.
Macalester's lead had grown to 15 before CSS got its next field goal to fall, as Keykal converted an and-one, making the score 82-70.
Crockett Jr. and Winesett both hit a three-pointer with roughly five minutes to play, but the Scots still held a 16-point lead.
A conversion of an and-one by Thomson and a late layup from Washington would be the Saints last field goals of the afternoon, as Macalester was able to take a 99-86 victory over CSS today.
Hitting the Road
The Saints (1-4, 0-2) will hit the road on Monday, where they will take on the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
