DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team took on another opponent from across the border in the Blue Devils from Wisconsin-Stout. The Saints scored five of the game's first six goals, and although the Blue Devils came close in a comeback attempt, St. Scholastica scored the lone two goals of the third period to take this one by a score of 7-4.
From the Rink
St. Scholastica wasted no time cracking the scoreboard in this one, as the first goal came off the stick of Tristan Shewchuck, assisted by Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), to take an early 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, the Saints added its second goal in the opening five minutes, courtesy of Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) and assisted by Sam Olson (Duluth, Minn./Cloquet HS), with CSS holding a 2-0 lead over the Blue Devils.
Adrian netted the third goal of the period for the Saints less than two minutes later, with an assist coming from Shewchuck, taking a 3-0 lead in the process.
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) got the start in the net for the Saints, and the freshman goalie stood tall in the net, recording early saves to keep Wisconsin-Stout off the board.
Late in the period, the Blue Devils found the back of the net, cutting its deficit to 3-1.
Despite the Blue Devils attempt to spark momentum, St. Scholastica scored before the end of the first period, coming on a goal from Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), assisted by Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) and Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya), to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.
To open up the second period, St. Scholastica repeated its success from the first period's opening minutes, as Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS) made the score 5-1 for the Saints.
Wisconsin-Stout responded just a little over a minute later, making the score 5-2.
The Blue Devils were able to make this game close, scoring two goals, one coming on the powerplay, to make the Saints lead sit at just one goal at 5-4.
Seitz helped get CSS an insurance goal early in the third period, coming off assists by Adrian and Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), to extend CSS lead to 6-4.
Rissanen was there for the Saints, stopping 13 shots in the third period, holding the score at 6-4.
After the Blue Devils pulled the goalie in an attempt to cut into its deficit, Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) scored for the second consecutive game, the empty net goal that put it away, as CSS defeated Wisconsin-Stout by a score of 7-4.
Goaltending
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) stopped 30 shots for the Saints, earning his first career win in the process in the 7-4 victory.
