ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team made the trip to Roseville, for an evening contest with its former conference rivals, the Northwestern Eagles. Unfortunately for the Saints, a tough night shooting from the field cost itself in the first half, trailing 41-23 at halftime. Although the Saints turned it around in the second half, the deficit was too great to come back from, as the Saints fell in this one by a score of 77-57.
How it Happened
Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) got the scoring starting for CSS, scoring the game's first points on a jumper, to give CSS a 2-0 lead.
Following a pair of free throws by Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and a jumper from Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), the Saints only trailed by a single point. The Eagles then went on a 9-2 run before Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) hit a three-pointer to give CSS its first field goal in nearly five minutes.
Later in the half, Thomas hit his second three-pointer of the game, cutting into the Eagles lead, as CSS trailed 22-15.
Crockett Jr. scored the next three points for the Saints, via the free throw line, as the Eagles now led 29-18.
Crockett Jr. and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) scored the final points for the Saints, on a layup and jumper, respectively. However, the Eagles took a 41-23 lead into the halftime break.
Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) got off to a hot start in the second half, scoring seven points to lead the Saints' 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to 11 points.
Moore hit another three-pointer after the Eagles hit one of its own, which was then followed by a pair of free throws from Crockett Jr., as CSS trailed 46-35.
Nelson scored the next two field goals for CSS, scoring five points, including hitting a three-pointer, to cut the deficit to under double-digits, trailing 50-42.
The Saints got even closer to tying the game when Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit a three-pointer, followed by a strong layup by Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS (Dakota County Technical College)), to make the score 52-47.
After Ojullu got credited with a steal, the junior made a great outlet pass to Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College), leading to a slam dunk. Nelson would respond on the following Saints possession with a layup, as the score now sat at 58-52.
Crockett Jr. would score the final three points for the Saints offense today, as the final field goal for the Saints came at the five minute mark. The Eagles closed out tonight's matchup, coming away with a 77-57 win over CSS.
