DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team took on Hamline University Friday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.
How it Happened
The first period was unusual for the hot-handed Saints as no goals were scored. Luckily, the Pipers did not take advantage of a CSS boarding penalty at 11:10. Saints had seven shots on goal, compared to the Piper's four.
Throughout the second, both teams would go back and forth between penalties, but no scoring would come out of it. Until a couple of minutes left, Hamline would be called for a five-minute major, giving the Saints a huge advantage. Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) would put the Saints on the board, his fourth on the season. Sam Olson (Duluth, Minn./Cloquet HS(Minnesota Wilderness NAHL)) and Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) had the assists. The Saints would have the 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.
This game would come down to the wire as CSS was on a power-play with three minutes left, then it was 4-on-4 as CSS would be called for slashing. The Pipers would then be on the power-play until there were about 20 seconds left in the period. Hamline would pull their netminder shortly after giving them the extra attacker.
Four shots would be fired in on goal by the Pipers, all saved. After a shot attempt by the Pipers, which resulted in a broken stick, Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS(Springfield Jr. Blues NAHL) would take a long-ranged shot that would fly towards the empty net, giving the Saints the shorthanded goal and room to breathe. Sixteen ticks later, the Saints had won their 11th win on the season and captured the 2-0 shutout.
Goaltending
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) earned his first shutout of the 2022-23 season and recorded 26 saves. Kevin Lake, a consistent MIAC Defensive Player of the Week recipient had 22 saves for the Pipers.
