SAINT PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team traveled down Interstate 35 to play game two of the series against Hamline University Saturday evening.
How it Happened
The first period ended the same as it did yesterday, a back-and-forth battle between these two teams would result in a scoreless first. Both teams went 0-for-1 on power-plays, the Saints had nine shots in the first period compared to the Pipers' 14.
Similar to last night, the Saints would score first in the second period. At 3:57 on the clock, Nathan Driver (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/River East Collegiate(Virden Oil Capitals MJHL)) would have the puck near the left circle and fire a wrist shot past the Piper netminder to take the 1-0 lead. Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) would be credited with the assist. With 9:15 remaining, Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS(University of New Hampshire)) would add another score for the Saints, assisted by Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)). With 1:06 left, the Saints wouldn't be able to secure the shoutout for the second night in a row, as the Pipers scored late. After the second, the Saints still held the upper hand 2-1.Â
Middle into the third, the Pipers would tie the game, but thirty-three seconds later CSS would fire back with a goal of their own. Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) would put the puck in the net, assists were made by Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) and Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)). CSS had the 3-2 lead for most of the period until the Pipers would pull their goaltender to bring on another attack with just under two minutes remaining. With thirty seconds left the Pipers managed to score, tying this game at three a piece.Â
The Saints and Pipers were headed into overtime. Adrian would win the faceoff for the Saints, and then the rest is history. Adrian would score the unassisted, game-winning goal to help his team climb to their 12th win and claim the series sweep.
