DULUTH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team hosted its conference rival, the Johnnies from St. John's. The Saints faced an early deficit, trailing by 12 at halftime, and St. John's expanded on its lead, defeating CSS by a score of 68-37.
First Half
The Saints were able to match the Johnnies early on, as
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got a jumper to fall, and
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) got a three-pointer to fall.
The Johnnies then opened up a 10-point lead over the Saints, but a basket by
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and a converted and-one by Carlson, helped put CSS back in the game, trailing by just six points.
The Johnnies again reclaimed its 10-point lead with three minutes to play in the first half.
Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North High School (Dakota County Technical College)) got his first points to fall and it was also the Saints last field goal of the half, as CSS trailed 27-15 at halftime.
Second Half
Winesett and
Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) got the CSS offense started in the second half, as both players got layups to fall, but CSS trailed 37-19.
With right around 12 minutes to play, Carlson made his presence felt, scoring on back-to-back Saints possessions, including a three-pointer, to make the score 47-27 in favor of the Johnnies.
Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) got his first points of the evening, on a layup with eight and half minutes to play, but CSS still trailed mightily.
The Saints scored its last field goal of the night with six and a half minutes to play in this one, as St. John's defeated CSS in today's matchup, by a score of 68-37.
