Men’s Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Battle Against Macalester

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team hosted the Scots from Macalester this afternoon, on Alumni Day for the Saints. While the game was tied at 31-31 at halftime, the Scots took today's back-and-forth matchup, by a score of 69-63.
 
First Half
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the first points of the game, hitting a three-point shot, taking a 3-0 lead in the process.
 
Just moments later, Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) scored his first points of the game, hitting a layup and a three-pointer, to take an early 9-2 lead.
 
The Saints extended its lead, after a layup by Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and a three-pointer by Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS), leading now by nine points.
 
A jumper by Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) gave the Saints a 19-8 lead halfway through the first half.
 
Minutes later, Carlson scored on back-to-back Saints possessions, to make the score 26-16 in favor of CSS.
 
After Macalester took a one-point lead, Winesett helped reclaim the lead, hitting a three-pointer, as CSS led 29-27.
 
Carlson scored a late layup in the half, as the game sat at 31-31 at halftime.
 
Second Half
The Scots and Saints traded baskets early in the second half, but the Scots took a nine-point lead, with right around nine minutes to play.
 
After the Scots extended its lead to nine points, Hendrickson hit a three-point shot, followed by a layup from Moore, to bring the deficit to four-points.
 
The game found itself tied at 47-47, after Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) and Hendrickson both hit layups.
 
Carlson converted an and-one with seven minutes to play, making the score 53-50.
 
Three-pointers by Winesett and Moore made the game a four-point deficit for CSS, trailing 62-58.
 
Macalester was able to hit 86.4% of its free throw attempts this afternoon, and in the closing minutes, that did not change. Winesett made a late three-pointer, but the Scots took today's matchup by a score of 69-63.
 
Up Next
The Saints (4-14, 3-10 MIAC) will be back in action next on Monday, where they will host the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus, in a conference matchup at Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
