NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey traveled to Northfield, Minn to open an important two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series against St. Olaf College.
How it Happened
At the 13:45 mark, St. Olaf would score first, although penalties on the Oles would give the Saints opportunities to capitalize on goals. With about thirty seconds left on their first power-play, Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS (Nipawin-SJHL)) would win the faceoff for the Saints. Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) and Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) would pass the puck to Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)), who would put CSS on the board, tying the game 1-1 at 11:00.
A few minutes later, a hooking penalty on the Oles would set up the Saints' second power-play goal in the first period. Junior Forward Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS(University of New Hampshire)) would put the puck in the net with 8:21 remaining, earning his second assist on the night was Johnson. Twenty seconds later the Saints would score again, this time it was Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) who would secure the quick goal, credited for the assists were Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) and Richels. The Saints would lead 3-1.
Seconds remaining in the first, three penalties were called two on CSS and one on St. Olaf. The Saints would be 3 on 4 to start the second period, although that didn't seem to phase Filimon as he scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at the 18:48 spot. The Saints would take the 4-1 advantage. Still, on the power-play, the Oles would answer back twenty-seven seconds later with a goal of their own to now only be down 4-2. Later in the second, CSS would be called for hooking, allowing for the Oles to once again secure a power-play goal, tightening the Saints' 4-3 lead.
The Saints would answer right back as Duluth native Sam Olson (Duluth, Minn./Cloquet HS(Minnesota Wilderness NAHL)) would score unassisted, Olson's second goal of the season. At 8:22, the Saints would be up on the scoreboard 5-3, St. Olaf wouldn't slow down just quite as Troy Bowditch would secure the hat trick with 6:57 on the clock. The next six minutes would eventually slow down as no team would allow any more goals in the period, CSS would hang on to the 5-4 lead heading into the final twenty minutes.
The third period would be leaning in the Saints' favor midway through the period. Adrian would score on a breakaway, his second goal of the night at the 10:20 mark. The Saints were up 6-4. Assist on the goal was by Nathan Driver (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/River East Collegiate(Virden Oil Capitals MJHL)). Everyone, including St. Olaf, was expecting to answer back with a goal of their own. It never did happen and the Saints would capitalize on a tripping call on the Oles with 2:33 left. The Canadian Driver would score his first collegiate goal for the Saints. The Ledenkov brothers had the assists. Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) and Saints would shutout the Oles in the third to pick up their ninth win of the season and pass St. Olaf for second in the conference standings, they now sit behind Saint John's (10-6-2, MIAC 6-2-1).
Goaltending
Bostedt stopped 27 of the 31 shots on goal and earned a save percentage of .871. For St. Olaf, Tyler Laureault lead the team with 16 saves.
