Sharp-shooting Bethel Defeats Men’s Basketball

ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team traveled to St. Paul this evening, taking on the Royals from Bethel University. Although the Saints trailed by just five points at halftime, the Royals got hot in the second hand, scoring 53 points, as they defeated the Saints by a score of 91-66.
 
First Half
Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) and Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got the scoring started for CSS this evening, as both players added layups, to match Bethel, as the game was tied at 4-4.
 
After the Royals went on a 7-0 run, Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got a jumper to fall, followed by a Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) three-pointer, to make it 13-9 in favor of Bethel.

Winesett helped trim the deficit for the Saints, hitting a pair of jumpers, one of them from beyond-the-arc, as the Royals led 18-16.
 
Both teams went cold for the next few minutes, but the Saints got its mojo back from a dunk and layup by Raymond, and a jumper by Carlson, but CSS still trailed 28-21.
 
Raymond and Carlson both ended the half strongly for the Saints, but Bethel led at the half, by a score of 36-33.
 
Second Half
Winesett and Hendrickson got the Saints' offense going in the early minutes of the second half, as the Saints trailed Bethel 41-37.
 
Carlson got Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) his first points of the evening on a nice assist, and Carlson scored himself with a three-pointer just moments later.
 
It seemed as if the Royals could not miss in the second half, as its four-point lead quickly became a 13-point lead.
 
Although the Saints were able to find the bottom of the net, with buckets by Raymond and Carlson, Bethel began to pull away in this one, leading by 20 points with five minutes to play.
 
The final minutes saw Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) get a layup and a pair of free throws to fall, and a three-pointer by Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored his first points of the night, but the game had been long decided, as CSS fell in this one by a score of 91-66.
 
Up Next
The Saints (4-12, 3-8 MIAC) will be back in action next on Wednesday, where they will look to split the season matchup against the Johnnies from St. John's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m at Reif Gymnasium.
