ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica baseball team traveled to St. Paul Sunday to take on Saint Mary's University this afternoon. The original doubleheader was scheduled for yesterday, but due to weather conditions, the game was moved to St. Paul in this Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup. The Saints were kept silenced for most part of the game, as Saint Mary's took an early lead and did not look back. In the second game of the day, the Cardinals took an early lead, but CSS marched back, scoring five runs in the final two innings, but fell just short and fell in both games in today's doubleheader.
Game 1: SMU 6, CSS 3
The first game of the doubleheader today saw Saint Mary's (10-9, 2-0 MIAC) take an early lead, scoring three runs in the first two innings as CSS' bats were silenced and trailed early, 3-0.
Saint Mary's extended its lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a home run that made the game 5-0 in favor of the Cardinals. The Cardinals added another run in the sixth inning, extending the score to 6-0.
CSS cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning, when
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) hit his third home run of the season and chipped into the Cardinals lead, making it 6-1. Later in the sixth,
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) reached base on an error and a single by
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) put two runners on with one out in the inning.
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) then doubled to left field which scored Olson and put two runners into scoring position making the score 6-2. Schemenauer scored on a groundout and made the game 6-3.
The Saints were silenced in the seventh inning, and as MIAC doubleheader rules apply, ended the game in the seventh as CSS fell 6-3 in today's first game.
Game 2: SMU 8, CSS 7
Game two of the afternoon saw Saint Mary's score an early run in the first inning, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) tripled to open the inning and was then driven in on a sacrifice-fly by
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), making the score 1-1.
Saint Mary's added two runs of its own in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on three hits and giving the Cardinals the lead, 3-1.
CSS responded in the bottom of the third inning as Tautges singled with two outs and was driven in on an RBI double by Tiemann, cutting the lead down to 3-2.
Saint Mary's added another run on a home run in the fourth inning, making the score 4-2. The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, adding to its lead, 7-2.
Both teams were silenced for the next two innings as the score remained the same heading into the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, CSS was able to chip into the Cardinals' lead. Venske led the inning off with a walk and
Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) also walked to put two men on to start the inning. Venske scored on Tautges' third hit of the ballgame, this one an RBI single to right center, advancing Harding to third. Tiemann then doubled to left center that scored Harding and advanced Tautges to third. Both runners were then driven in on an RBI double by Olson and made the score 7-6 heading into the ninth inning.
Saint Mary's added another insurance run in the ninth on a home run that made the score 8-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, Venske started the inning by getting on base via a hit by pitch. Harding then singled through the left side, putting two men on with no one out in the inning.
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) singled on an infield bunt single that made the bases loaded with no outs. Venske scored on a sacrifice fly by Tautges, which made the game 8-7. Unfortunately, the Saints were silenced to end the game and ultimately dropped both games of today's doubleheader, with the second game ending by a score of 8-7.
