ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – On Wednesday, St. Scholastica softball played its second game against the College of Saint Benedict, which had been rescheduled from a previous date. The Bennies got a two-out double in the seventh to defeat the Saints 5-4.
How it Happened
A slower start to the game for the Saints as they remained scoreless until the top of the third trying to catch up to three runs St. Ben's scored in the first two innings. In the top of the third CSS scored two runs off three hits.
Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)) had her first collegiate double and then later scored off a double from
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS).
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) was next to hit a double that inning and scored Laviano.
The game remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when the Bennies (24-6, 12-4 MIAC) scored an unearned run bringing the score to 4-2. However, this didn't stop St. Scholastica as some clutch hits came in the top of the seventh.
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) got the inning started with a single. Then with two outs Breuer scored off a single by
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS).
Mady Peterson (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) came in to pinch run for Howe and eventually scored off a single by Laviano to tie the game at 4-4.
However, St. Scholastica ended up taking the loss in the bottom of the seventh as an unearned run came across as the game-winning run allowing St. Ben's to take a 5-4 win.
At the plate for CSS
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) went 2-for-4 and
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) and Gladitsch both went 1-for-2.
