ST PETER, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team was defeated by Gustavus Adolphus College twice on Monday in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader.
Game 1: GAC 7, CSS 6
The first game of the day saw the Gusties (15-21, 10-12 MIAC) open up a 7-0 lead after five innings on the Saints. Gustavus had the winning run on third in the fifth inning, which would have ended the game by mercy rule. St. Scholastica would get out of the inning to extend the game.
Then in the top of the seventh, the Saints almost would come all the way back. The first five batters reached base in the inning.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) doubled to score
Mady Peterson (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS).
Kate Broderick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) singled to score
Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)).
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) singled with one out to plate Rosenthal. Broderick then scored on a
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) as the score was suddenly 7-4 with the go-ahead run at the plate.
The Saints would get runner cut down at home on the next at-bat for the second out. Now, with CSS down to their final out and the bases loaded,
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) ripped double to begin two in and the Saints were looking to send a third home to tie the game, but would be thrown out at the plate as the Gusties survived for the 7-6 victory.
Laviano had two hits and two RBIs to pace the offense. Rosenthal and Madisson Blade also had a pair of hits.
Game 2: GAC 9, CSS 4
In the second game, the Saints kept the momentum going and scored two runs in the first inning off three hits. Unfortunately, Gustavus also brought the same momentum they had in the first game and tied the score quickly in the bottom of the first. It remained a tie game until the top of the third when
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had a solo shot to centerfield giving CSS a 3-2 lead.
Gustavus rallied back quickly in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead 5-3 off two hits. Leading up to the seventh inning, the Gusties were able to score another four runs, while the Saints struggled to get anything past the defense.
Though CSS was hoping they could get another rally going in the top of the seventh, the inning didn't play out in their favor this time. However, they were able to scratch another run across in the top of the seventh leaving the final score to be a 9-4 loss.
At the plate for CSS, Howe went 2-for-4 with a home run and
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS), Dail and Peterson went 1-for-2.
