ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – On Saturday, St. Scholastica softball faced No. 14 Bethel University and was dealt two losses. In the first game the Saints were run ruled 12-2 in five innings and in the second game they lost 6-1.
Game 1: Bethel 12, CSS 2 (F/5)
CSS didn't start off as hoped as only one runner was able to get on base and then was left stranded. In the bottom of the first inning The Royals (23-2, 12-0 MIAC) scored their first run of the game. It was looking good for the Saints going into the bottom of third as it was now a 1-1 game after
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored off a single by
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS), However, it ended going in a downhill as Bethel plated six runs off five hits to take a 7-1 advantage.
St. Scholastica was able to scratch another run across in the top of the fourth, but unfortunately it was their last run scored in the first game, not enough to catch up to the Royals. In the bottom of the fourth the Royals scored another five runs on three hits giving them a 10-run lead, enough to allow them to end the game early after the top of the fifth inning by a run rule. The final came out to be the Saints losing 12-2.
At the plate,
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS),
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS),
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) and Howe made up the four hits obtained by the Saints.
Game 2: Bethel 6, CSS 1
The first inning went quickly for both teams, three up and three down for the Saints and only four up for Bethel. CSS was able to be the ones to score first in the second inning as
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) came in to run for Laviano and ended up scoring St. Scholastica's one run off a double by Dail. Unfortunately, this was their one and only run scored for the game and was not enough to bring home a win for the Saints.
Between the third and fifth innings, Bethel scored all six of their runs and keep St. Scholastica off the scoreboard to win 6-1.
The five hits for the Saints were by
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS),
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS), Dail, Howe and Laviano.
