DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica Softball played on-campus for the first time this season, taking on Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader on the turf of Saints Field. The Saints won game one 14-10, but dropped the nightcap 10-7.

Game 1: CSS 14, SMU 10
In the first game, the Saints started the game off by being down 1-0 after the top of the first but that wasn't the case for long. In the bottom of the inning, CSS was able to gain a 4-1 lead off of six hits, starting with a triple from Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS). Former Cardinal Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)), Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) all had RBIs in the inning.

The Cardinals (13-13, 6-9 MIAC) came back in the second inning though and tied up the game 4-4 off of two hits. But just as the previous inning went, St. Scholastica came back in the bottom of the second scoring two runs off of two hits.

It remained a 6-4 ball game until the bottom of the fourth when CSS added to its lead thanks to a RBI triple by Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and a RBI by Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to make it 8-4.

However, Saint Mary's came back fighting and ended up scoring five runs off of six hits in the top of top of the fifth, taking a 9-8 lead. As in previous innings the Saints didn't let the opposing team scoring some runs slow them down as they scored another three runs on three hits to regain the lead at 11-9.

This high scoring game wasn't over yet though as the Saints put up another three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals were able to scratch another run across in the seventh but was unable to catch up to the Saints. St. Scholastica ended up taking the win 14-10.

At the plate for CSS, Howe went 4-for-4, Breuer went 3-for-4 and Stewart went 2-for-3. Howe finished with three RBIs and scored three times. Breuer scored four times and was a home run shy of the cycle.

Game 2: CSS 10, SMU 7
The second game didn't start in favor of the Saints as did the first game but this time they were unable to come back quickly like they had done in the previous game. Saint Mary's scored three runs in the first four innings before the Saints could scratch a run across. It was in the bottom of the fourth that CSS was able to tie up the game 3-3 after a two-run double by Hadlich and a Rbi single by Rosenthal. Unfortunately, this score didn't hold for long as the Cardinals came back and scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

The Saints fell into another bit of a hole in the top of the sixth as another four runs were scored against them. Going into the bottom of the sixth St. Scholastica was down 10-3. However, they did not give in just yet as they were able to score another two runs off as Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) and Savannah Romero (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS (Bethel)) recorded RBIs. Going into the bottom of the seventh it was still a 10-5 ballgame. CSS was able to put up another two runs scored by Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)) and Howe, but there weren't enough hits strung together to allow the Saints to finish off the game taking a win from the Cardinals. The final score came out to be 10-7 after a tough fight until the end by the Saints.

At the plate for CSS, Stewart went 2-for-4, the only one to have more than one hit for CSS in the second game. Hadlich finished with three RBIs.
