ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica softball split its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) debut against Hamline University, losing their first game 9-7 and coming back to win their second game 11-7.

Hamline 9, CSS 7 (F/8)
The first game was a close match between both teams as the score was within one run up until the fifth inning. The Saints were leading 2-1 going into the fifth when Hamline (10-5, 1-1 MIAC) pulled out five hits and scored three runs. CSS didn't finish the inning though without scoring first as Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) scored the third run for the Saints off a groundout RBI from Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) leaving the Saints only down by one run.

The score remained the same until the seventh inning. Hamline scratched another run across in the top of the 7th now giving them the lead 5-3. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning the Saints had the heart of their lineup coming in. Second batter up Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) hit a double to left center and Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)) came in to pinch run. Emma Sather (Chetek, Wis./Chetek-Weyerhaeuser HS) then got walked and Savannah Romero (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS (Bethel)) came in to pinch run as well. Kate Broderick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) came in to pinch hit for the Saints In place of Dail and hit a double down the right field line scoring both Gladitsch and Romero tying up the game for the Saints and bringing them into extra innings.

Unfortunately, the first game did not come to an end in favor of the Saints in the eighth inning. Hamline scored another four runs and St. Scholastica was only able to scratch another two across leaving the Saints with a 9-7 loss.

At the plate, Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) went 2-for-2 and Rosenthal went 2-for-3.

CSS 11, Hamline 7
The Saints had a strong start as they scored five runs off six hits. CSS kept it going in the second inning scoring another four runs giving them a 9-0 lead. At the top of the third the Saints had a rough inning as Hamline scored five runs off three hits. At the top of the fourth Hamline scored another two runs making it just a two-run ball game.

At the bottom of the sixth the Saints were able to put up a few more runs up on the board scoring two runs off three hits. The three hits were from Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), Stewart, and Maddison Blade (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS). The Saints were able to finish up the game winning 11-7.

At the plate, Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Blade both went 3-for-4. Howe also got the win in the pitching circle.
