NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica softball was back in Northfield on Tuesday but this time they faced Carleton College. The Saints would split, dropping game one 7-1 and plating two runs late to win game two 5-3.

Game 1: Carleton 7, CSS 1
Another game that started off in favor of the Saints as they scored first in the top of the first inning. After getting walked, stealing second, and advancing to third by a single from Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS), Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) then scored off an error by the right fielder from Lauren Laviano's (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) at bat. Unfortunately Carleton (16-7, 4-3 MIAC) came back pretty quickly and scored two runs in the bottom of the first quickly gaining their lead.

Howe came in to pitch for CSS in the second in relief of Emma Sather (Chetek, Wis./Chetek-Weyerhaeuser HS) and closed out the inning with a fly out to the infield. Sather then returned to the circle in the third but was then replaced by Savannah Romero (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS (Bethel)) later on in the inning. Romero came in and struck out the first two batters and had the third out come from a fly out to right.

The remainder of the game was scoreless for the Saints as the hits weren't stringing together to score any of the nine runners left on base throughout the game leaving St. Scholastica with a 7-1 loss.

At the plate for CSS, Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) went 2-for-3 and Lavino went 2-for-4.

Game 2: CSS 5, Carleton 3
The second game started with the Saints scoring first in the first inning yet again. After hitting a single to left center, Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) advanced to second on a single by Howe followed by being advanced to third by a single from Laviano. Stewart then scored the first run of the game off of a sacrifice fly ball foul to the right fielder by Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). Howe then scored the second run off a single up the middle from Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). In the bottom of the first inning the Saints shut down Carleton leaving them scoreless.

CSS then gained a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Breuer singled to left then moved to second from a single to center by Stewart then scored off of a single to left center from Howe. Carleton was able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the second but the Saints still maintained a 2-1 lead. It was in the bottom of the third that Carleton was able to tie up the game 3-3. As it got dark at Carleton's field with no lights It remained a tie ballgame until the seventh inning.

Howe got the seventh inning going with a double to left center. Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) came in to pinch run for Howe and scored off an RBI double down the third baseline from Laviano. Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) came in to run for Laviano. Hadlich then singled to right field and Plemel was able to score off of an error made by the right fielder bringing the score to 5-3. The Saints were able to close out the bottom of the seventh with no more runs scored by Carleton and were able to take home a 5-3 win.

At the plate for CSS, Howe went 3-for-4 and Hadlich went 2-for-3. Laviano and Stewart both also went 2-4.
