NORTHFIELD, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team dropped both games of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader on Saturday against St. Olaf College. The games were played at the Dundas Dome due to cold temperatures.
Game 1: St. Olaf 5, CSS 2
The Saints jumped out to a two-run lead only to see the Oles (11-13, 6-0 MIAC) score the final five runs, including three in the fifth inning to take game one 5-2.
St. Scholastica put together a two-out rally in the top of the first with a
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) RBI single, followed by a
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) RBI single to make it 2-0.
Back-to-back doubles by St. Olaf in the second inning made it 2-1. Later in the inning, a two-out infield single tied the contest at 2-2. The Saints loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning, but came up empty in the inning.
The Oles took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning as the first three batters reached base and they all scored in the inning to make it 5-2. The Saints did not reach base the rest of the game to make the final 5-2.
Six different Saints recorded hits in the contest.
Game 2: St. Olaf 5, CSS 3
In game two, the Oles once again put together a three-run inning late in the contest to complete the sweep by a 5-3 final.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had a RBI single in the top of the first to bring in
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. A two-out double in the bottom frame gave St. Olaf a 2-1 lead after one inning.
In remained that score until the fifth inning, when St. Scholastica took advantage of two St. Olaf errors with
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) and
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) coming across to score to make it 3-2 Saints.
Entering the bottom of the sixth, the first three St. Olaf batters reached base on walks. The Oles would tie the game with a one-out sacrifice fly and then take the lead with a two-out, two-run double to make it 5-3.
The Saints did not threaten in the seventh, falling 5-3.
Hadlich was 2-for-2 at the plate in game two.
Concordia Doubleheader Postponed Again
The Saints (10-13, 2-7 MIAC) were scheduled to face Concordia College-Moorhead in a make-up doubleheader on Monday. However, due to forecasted temperatures, that doubleheader is postponed once again. The teams will hope to make it up on Tuesday, April 26 in Moorhead.
The next scheduled games for the Saints are Tuesday back in Northfield for a doubleheader against Carleton College. Action is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
