MINNEAPOLIS (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica softball team made the trip to Minneapolis on Sunday to take on the Auggies from Augsburg University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) battle. The Auggies took an early lead in game one and were able to hold off the Saints. In game two however, a dominant outing from
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) put the Saints on cruise control and were able to take game two, 3-0.
Â
Game 1: AUG 7, CSS 4
The Auggies (10-13, 2-6 MIAC) jumped on the scoreboard early in the first inning, scoring two runs.
Â
In the top of the third inning, Augsburg added another run, scoring on a wild pitch that was followed by an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game in favor of the Auggies. Another run crossed the plate on an RBI groundout that extended its lead to 5-0.
Â
Augsburg added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, coming on an RBI double and an RBI single which gave the Auggies a 7-0 lead.
Â
The Saints, who were held hitless through the first five innings went to work in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) doubled down the left field line. She advanced to third base on a passed ball and stole home while
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), who was walked after Bolin's double, was attempting to steal second base, which she did successfully. Breuer would later score in the inning on a fielding error, making the game 7-2 Augsburg.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh inning,
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) doubled to right to put a runner on with one out for the Saints. She would score on an RBI single by
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) to make it 7-3. The Saints would add another run in the inning, coming off of an RBI single to right center which scored
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS), who pinch ran for Dail, to make it 7-4. The Saints had the tying run at the plate with one out in the seventh, but were unable to come all the way back, falling 7-4.
Â
Game 2: CSS 3, AUG 0
The Saints gave the ball to
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) for game two. The senior struck out two Auggies batters in the first inning and drove in a run herself in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Howe struck out five over the next three innings, surrendering only two hits in the process to protect the Saints' lead.
Â
CSS struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning, this run coming off of an RBI double by Dail that scored Hadlich, who walked to open up the inning, extending CSS' lead to 2-0.
Â
Howe continued her dominance in the fifth and sixth innings, striking out three more batters while barely giving Augsburg any chance to get any momentum.
Â
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) singled to open up the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Saints an early baserunner. Rosenthal was pinch run for by
Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS), who later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)), making the game 3-0.
Â
Howe was called upon to finish off the Auggies and she did just that, striking out two more Auggie batters giving her a season-high 12 strikeouts this season and giving the Saints a 3-0 victory in game two.
