DAVENPORT, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team surrendered eight runs in the third inning and could not recover in a 16-6 setback in eight innings to Roger Williams University (R.I.) to open play at the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday.
How It Happened
The Hawks (5-0) got a double and triple in the third inning and led 2-0 with two outs. However, the Saints could not get that third out of the inning as Roger Williams scored six more runs with two outs to lead 8-0 after three.
The Saints responded as
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) hit his second home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning. Three batters later,
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) doubled in
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) to make it 8-2. Later in the inning,
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) and the score was 8-3. However, after the Saints recorded two quick outs in the bottom half, the Hawks had three consecutive hits which led to two more runs with two outs to push the margin back to 10-3.
St. Scholastica loaded the bases in the sixth inning with one out, but came up empty in the inning. However, the Saints took advantage of the first two hitters reaching base in the seventh as Schemenauer hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Harris. Schelonka then scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded with one out again in the seventh,
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) was hit-by-pitch to bring in Olson and the score was 10-6. Unfortunately, the Saints stranded the bases loaded again with one out and the margin remained four runs.
Roger Williams had another two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs, all with two outs to make it 14-6. The Hawks scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the game by a final of 16-6.
