DAVENPORT, Fla. (
csssaints.com) - After falling in the first game of the RussMatt Invitational, the St. Scholastica baseball team took on Ramapo College (N.J.) in game two Monday night. While Ramapo scored early runs and took an early lead into the sixth inning, the Saints' bats came alive in the last three innings, scoring 10 runs in that span, while defeating Ramapo 15-8.
Â
How it Happened
The Roadrunners (2-3) scored three runs early in the top of the first inning on three hits, a pair of singles and a double that gave them an early 3-0 lead over CSS.
Â
After being blanked through the first two innings, the Saints got on the scoreboard, on a two-out solo home run by
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) that cut the lead to two, trailing 3-1.
Â
Ramapo responded to the Saints' run in the third by scoring on an RBI single with two outs in the top of the fourth which extended its lead back to three with a 4-1 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Saints were sparked by a double by
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) and with two outs in the inning,
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) singled to left that scored Venske and dug into the Roadrunners lead, 4-2.
Â
Ramapo added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, with both runs scoring on an RBI single, which extended its lead over CSS 6-2.
Â
In the Saints' half of the fifth inning, the big hits the Saints had been searching for, showed up. Harris walked with one out and advanced to third base on a single to right field by
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and advanced to second on a fielding error. With two on and one out,
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) stepped up to the plate looking for a big hit the Saints had been craving. Schelonka delivered, singling up the middle which scored both Harris and Olson.
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) stepped up next and doubled to right center, he was thrown out trying to extend his double to a triple, but Schelonka scored and made the game 6-5.
Â
Ramapo scored two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run and gave the Roadrunners an 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
The bottom of the sixth saw the Saints get some breaks. Tiemann walked to open the inning, and a throwing error put runners on second and third with no one out. Harris then doubled to left center field scoring two and adding to his three RBI on the day, while making the score 8-7.
Â
The Roadrunners were shut down in the top of the seventh and the bottom half of the inning saw the Saints take a lead they would not lose. Schemenauer doubled to right to open the inning, in which he was thrown out at home trying to score on a single by Venske. Venske advanced to second on the throw home, where he eventually scored on a wild pitch. Harris was walked intentionally later in the inning and with two outs and the bases loaded, Olson drove in two runners on an RBI single to right center field, making the score 11-8 in favor of CSS. Schelonka then doubled, scoring both Olson and Harris. Schelonka was thrown out at third to end the inning, an inning that saw CSS score six while giving them a 13-8 lead over the Roadrunners.
Â
Ramapo went down quietly in the eighth inning, and the Saints added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Both of those runs came off a two-run home run by Tiemann which gave the Saints a comfortable lead and propelled them to a 15-8 victory in the second game of the RussMatt Invitational.
