DECATUR, Ill. (
csssaints.com) – For the second consecutive game, the St. Scholastica baseball team fell by way of a walk-off as Millikin University (Ill.) broke a 4-4 tie with a bases-loaded one out single in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4 on Monday.
How It Happened
The Saints took an early 2-0 lead on a
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) two-run single in the top of the first to bring in
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) and
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS). After the Big Blue (7-2) got one run in the bottom frame with a two-out single,
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) scored on a Novak RBI groundout in the top of the second to once again make it a two-run game.
St. Scholastica extended the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Tautges scored on a wild pitch. However, Millikin struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
With the score still 4-4 in the eighth inning, the Saints threatened with Tautges standing on third and nobody out. However, he would be stranded at third in the inning as the next three CSS batters went down in order.
A one-out single got the Big Blue going in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch, a walk and an infield single quickly loaded the bases. Millikin then broke the tie with a single to left to bring home the winning run by a final of 5-4.
