NORTHFIELD, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In the opening weekend for the St. Scholastica softball team, the Saints brought home two wins in a doubleheader against Northland College late Saturday night. The Saints won their first game 4-3 and run ruled the LumberJills in six innings 10-2 in the nightcap.
CSS 4, Northland 3
Not allowing Northland (1-5) to gain the lead throughout the first game helped the Saints to keep a positive momentum. In the first inning the LumberJills may have come out and scored a run first, but the Saints came back right away and had a two-out rally, scoring two unearned runs. However, Northland quickly came back and tied it up 2-2 in the top of the second inning, while the Saints ended up leaving one runner stranded on third at the bottom of the second.
The next two innings were quiet for Northland as they went three up, three down in the third and fourth inning. In the fourth inning it was
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) who scored the third run for the Saints and it was
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) who scored the winning run in the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning shortstop Dail made her first double play of the season, fielding a ball going up the middle, taking the out herself at two then quickly making the throw to first baseman Howe.
At the plate for CSS
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS),
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)), and Howe all went 2-for-3. Both of Hadlich's hits were also RBIs for the Saints.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) went the distance to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.
CSS 10, Northland 2 (F/6)
Howe opened game two with two strikeouts. The inning ended with the Saints batting through their lineup and scoring six runs giving the Saints a positive start after a close matchup in the first game.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) also hit a three-run homerun within this inning for her first collegiate dinger
The top of the second inning ended up being like the first with two strikeouts from Howe. At the bottom of the second, St. Scholastica's
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) was able to scratch another run across making their lead 7-0 against Northland.
Northland was only able to get two runners in scoring position up until the fourth inning, but then in the fourth they were able to put themselves on the board scoring their only two runs of the game.
Rosenthal drove I two in the sixth inning to end the game in six innings 10-2.
Howe had five strikeouts in six innings, with no walks. At the plate, Laviano was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Saints.

The Saints (2-0) will be playing in Oshkosh, Wisconsin next Sunday against Ripon College (Wis.) at 2 p.m. and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 4 p.m.
