DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoff appearance, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team equalized Bethel University twice, but would fall with less than four minutes remaining in overtime by a score of 4-3 to see its season come to an end Saturday night in quarterfinal action at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints took an early lead with a
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) goal five minutes into the game.
Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) had the assist. The Royals (15-10-1) scored a pair of goals one minute and seven seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
St. Scholastica controlled much of the second period and moments after having a goal waved off due to goaltender interference, the Saints tied it up at 2-2 on a F. Ledenkov power-play goal with 12:35 left in the period. Hinterser and
Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) had the assist. The Saints outshot the Royals 15-8 in the period.
It remained 2-2 heading to the third period when Bethel took the lead with under four minutes left. However, the Saints and F. Ledenkov answered again 31 seconds later to tie it at 3-3. Hinterser and
Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) had the assists. CSS almost took the lead right after that goal, but
Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) would hit the pipe and the game went to overtime tied at 3-3.
The Saints were rewarded with a power-play midway through the 20-minute overtime, but could not take advantage. With less than four minutes left in the first overtime, the Royals would find net to advance to the MIAC semifinals with a 4-3 victory.
Goaltending
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) had 33 saves for the Saints, while Travis Allen finished with 41 saves for Bethel.
