ST. PETER, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's basketball team traveled to St. Peter Saturday for its final regular season road game to take on the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College. While the matchup was a neck and neck battle throughout the first half, Gustavus pulled away in the second half and defeated the Saints 78-67.
How It Happened
CSS opened the first half shooting the ball quite well, a three-pointer by
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), gave the Saints a four-point lead early in the first half. Gustavus (12-7, 9-5 MIAC) went on a little run of its own, re-claiming the lead with a little under nine minutes left in the first half. Layups by
Zach Sjoblad (Nisswa, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) and
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) gave CSS the lead once again with six minutes to play.
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) made his presence felt to close out the first half, scoring three baskets, including two three-pointers to help CSS stay within grasp of Gustavus. The Gusties took a 36-32 lead into halftime.
Gustavus opened the second half with an attack that worked, expanding its four-point lead into a 15-point lead in just under seven minutes. A
Payton Wefel (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) jumper cut Gustavus' lead to 11, but that's the closest the Saints would get, as Gustavus would continue its dominance this afternoon, taking today's matchup 78-67
