Baseball Travels to No. 22 Whitewater this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – After splitting its first games in Minnesota against Saint Mary's University, the St. Scholastica baseball team will travel to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a doubleheader Saturday.

What you need to know about the Saints:
-The Saints retained their .500 record with a split against Saint Mary's on Thursday.
-Game one went to CSS as they moved above .500 for the first time this season with a 12-4 victory.
-In game one the Saints were highlighted by sophomore Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS), juniors Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS) and Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS), and senior Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS).
-Tautges went the distance tossing all seven innings for the Saints, allowing seven hits, four runs, and added in two punch-outs.
-The others led the way for the offense, combining for eight of the teams nine RBIs. Weber continued his hot start out of gate going 2-for-3 with his first homer of the season and two RBIs. Tyman was 2-for-3 out of the 9-hole for the Saints. Wollenzien had the hottest bat of the game going 2-for-4 and drove in six runs.
-Game two the Saints fell back to a .500 record in a hard-fought game, but ultimately the bats couldn't pick up where they left off in game one.
-Jake Sande (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) picked up his first loss of the season as he also went distance for CSS. Sande threw seven innings allowing nine hits, four runs, and one strikeout.
-On the offense side of the ball it was Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) getting things done going 2-for-3 and getting his swing going after a slow start to the season. Wollenzien picked up his seventh RBI of the day driving in the Saints lone run in game 2.
-Through the first 10 games, Weber leads the Saints with a .389/.463/.611 slash-line (AVG/OBP/SLG), three doubles, to go along with a home run.
-Weber is currently on a 7-game hit streak.
-Freshman Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) is the next closest to Weber slashing .310/.444/.379.
-Senior Isaac Rocha (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) is averaging more than 1.25 K/IP. He has 15 strikeouts on the season, while only pitching in 11 innings.
 
What You Need to Know about UW-Whitewater:
Record: 5-5, 0-0 WIAC
-The Warhawks were again picked to finish at the top of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this season in the preseason coaches' poll.
-The Warhawks are currently ranked No. 22 in the country according to D3Baseball.com
-This is the worst start for Whitewater since they went 6-4 in their first 10 games back in 2012.
-The Warhawks played the University of St. Thomas in a doubleheader down at the Pensacola BlueWahoos Stadium (MN Twins AA affiliate) and split. Losing game 1, 6-0, and winning game 2, 9-1.
-Through their first 10 games, Cal Aldridge leads the lineup with a .408/.489/.757 slash-line. He has four doubles and three home runs so far this season.
-Aldridge is a preseason first team D3baseball.com All-American.
-Of the six players who have registered enough ABs this season to qualify for conference leaders, five have a batting average over .300 and an on-base percentage over .375.
-That list includes, Aldridge, Bryan Sturdevant, Nick Schrader, Mike Aiello, and Nick Santoro.
-Through three starts, Michael Kaska owns a 2.81 ERA in 16 innings. He's held hitters to a .172 average and has picked up 23 strikeouts.
-Kaska is a preseason second team D3baseball.com All-American.
 
Series Record: UWW 18-4 (Last Meeting: 13-1 UWW – 4/30/2018)
 
Series History: The Saints are only 2-8 in the last 10 games against the Warhawks. The Last time the Saints faced Whitewater when they weren't ranked in the top-10 nationally was 5/19/2012 when they weren't ranked at all. The only other time the Saints played an unranked UWW team was that first meeting in 2005.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will head back into WIAC country when they take on another WIAC powerhouse University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
