Men’s Hockey Begins Non-Conference Stretch this Week

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team will play the first two of six consecutive non-conference games this week when it travels to face Saint John's University on Thursday and then hosts Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-CSS enters competition on a six-game winless streak.
-The Saints are coming off a 4-4 tie against Trine University (Ind.) on Saturday.
-Freshman Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and sophomore Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) each recorded two goals in the tie.
-Freshman Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) has registered one point in three straight games.
-Sophomore Kyle Star (Langley, British, Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) is coming off a three-point weekend.
-CSS ranks second in NCAA Division III with 26.8 penalty minutes per game.
-The Saints have picked up at least eight penalties in six of the last seven games; CSS committed eight penalties in a game only eight times the previous two seasons combined.
-Senior defenseman Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) is three points shy of 50 for his career.
-Freshman goaltender Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) has an assist in each of his first two collegiate games.

What You Need to Know about Saint John's:
-The Johnnies enter Thursday night's contest with an 8-2-2 overall record.
-Saint John's is currently 4-2 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
-SJU is unbeaten in its last five games (3-0-2) and is coming off a series sweep of Saint Mary's University.
-Saint John's is the first team outside of the USCHO.com Division III poll.
-Over the Thanksgiving weekend, the Johnnies tied NCHA schools Marian University (Wis.) and Concordia University Wisconsin.
-The Johnnies statically has the best special team units in the country with a combined success rate between the power-play and penalty kill of 62 percent.
-Sophomore forward Brady Heppner leads the MIAC with 14 points.
-Freshman Travis Brown has eight points from his defenseman position.

-Gustavus is 5-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
-GAC enters with a four-game win streak with back-to-back sweeps of Hamline University and Bethel University.
-The Gusties shut out Bethel in both games last weekend.
-Junior Evan Erickson and freshman Caleb Anderson each have nine points to lead the team.
-Erickson has a team-high five goals, while Anderson leads all MIAC freshmen in points.
-Senior Colin Hernon leads the squad with six assists.
-Junior Chris Amsden has started six of the 10 games in goal and has a 1.81 goals-against-average and .939 save percentage.
-The Gusties have out-scored teams 17-4 in the second period.
-GAC is 3-0 away from St. Peter.

Series History: The Saints have won the last two meetings over the Gusties by 4-1 scores … The home win in 2015 was CSS' first over Gustavus since the 2003 season.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints have their final two games before semester break when they hit the road to face the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday, December 15 and Augsburg University on Saturday, December 16.
