ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Hamline University early in the day, but suffered its first defeat during spring break falling to Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) in the evening.
CSS 8, Hamline 1The Saints began the day with a convincing 8-1 victory over the Pipers.
CSS swept doubles play for the third straight match. The No. 1 team of
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) won 8-2. The No. 2 duo of
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) and
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) won 8-5. That was the same result for the No. 3 team of
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS).
Solberg (No. 1) won a tight first set on her way to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory. Scanlan (No. 2), Hauer (No. 3) and
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) (No. 4) each won in straight sets. Rice (No. 5) came from a set down to win in a third set super-breaker 4-6, 7-5, (10-8).
Birmingham-Southern 7, CSS 2The Saints saw their three-match win streak come to an end with a 7-2 loss to the Panthers.
After winning nine straight doubles matches, the Saints were swept in doubles play by Birmingham-Southern (7-2). The Panthers are ranked No. 15 in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In singles play, Hauer won her fifth straight match at the No. 3 spot, winning in a super-breaker 6-4, 2-6, (10-4). Coryell also won her fifth straight match, winning 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot.
