STEVENS POINT, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon. The Saints lost the first contest 11-7 and the second 13-0.

Game 1: CSS 7, UW-Stevens Point 11
CSS got the scoring started in the first by stringing together three consecutive singles. Austin Marolt was the first to reach base, followed by Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ). Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) then drove in Marolt for the games first run as the Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

The game would remain tied at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, where the Pointers exploded for six runs. A pair of singles, a pair of walks and a hit batsman resulted in two runs and loaded the bases for Stevens Point, who responded by hitting a grand slam to open up a 6-1 lead through four.

CSS would respond in the fifth by playing small-ball to close the gap to 6-2. After Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) was hit by a pitch, a sacrifice bunt and a single brought him home to bring the Saints within four.

Unfortunately for St. Scholastica, Stevens Point was able to score two runs in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 8-2. A single and a double scored one for the Pointers, and a sacrifice bunt squeezed in another run from third to put the Saints down six through five innings.

The Saints continued to battle, scoring another run in the sixth. Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) singled to open the inning and Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) doubled to center field to bring the score to 8-3. The Pointers would double up the Sains for the second consecutive inning, scoring a pair of runs to extend the lead to 10-3 through six.

CSS would not go away in the seventh, bringing three runs across to come within four runs. A single and a walk put two runners on for Bernsdorf, who singled to drive in one run. Duex followed with a double, bringing home the second run of the inning and putting Bernsdorf in position to trot home on a sacrifice fly by Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ), bringing the score to 10-6. Both teams would add one run apiece in the latter innings to bring the score to the final of 11-7 in favor of the Pointers.

Mark Kowalke picked up the win for UW-Stevens Point, throwing five innings and giving up just a pair of runs on six hits. Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) picked up the loss for the Saints, giving up six runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.

Game 2: CSS 0, UW-Stevens Point 13

The second game of the doubleheader was all Pointers, as CSS was only able to muster five hits through seven innings. Stevens Point quickly opened up a 5-0 lead as the Pointers unleashed a flurry of two doubles and two singles in combination with a pair of walks in the opening inning.

The scoreboard would remain the same until the bottom of the third, where Stevens Point would tack on another four runs to push the lead to 9-0. A pair of walks and a double would bring home the first two runs, and another double and a single pushed in the final two runs of the inning.

The bottom of the fourth would push the score to the final of 13-0 in favor of the Pointers as Stevens Point scored four more runs. A single, walk and a wild pitch resulted in one run, and a ground-out to first brought the score to 11-0.
