MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team finished out the UMAC regular season with a sweep over the North Central Rams. With the two wins, the Saints achieved an undefeated conference season at 21-0.
Game 1: CSS 7, North Central 0 (Win by Forfeit)
The first game ended in bizarre fashion as the Saints built a 21-7 lead, putting up 10 runs in the first tinning and 11 runs in the third. However, the Rams had only nine players suited up for the game and once a player was injured in the bottom of fourth baserunning, they did not have enough players to finish the game and the game was declared a forfeit.
Thus all of the stats accumulated in the game up to that point will not count and the official final score will be 7-0.
Game 2: CSS 14, North Central 3 (F/5) (Box Score)The Rams were fortunate to enough players to play a second game. The Saints' bats were going early and often as they scored at least one run in every inning en route to a dominating 14-3 victory in five innings.
The action started with a lead-off double from
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) and after a couple outs,
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) hit her fifth home run of the year to give the Saints a quick 2-0 lead.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) made it back-to-back home runs for the Saints in the next at-bat. North Central bounced right back though as Amanda Roth hit a RBI-single to right field to cut the lead to 3-1.
The second inning would be a lot of the same as
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) hit her team-high seventh home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center field to make it 5-0. In the third inning,
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) would bring in McCabe on the first of four RBIs for Zwak in the game.
North Central would get a couple more runs on the board as Roth hit her second RBI in the game and later was brought home on an RBI-single by Holly Pieper to make the score 7-3 going into the fourth inning.
With runners on second and third, McCabe would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to score. The next two batters,
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and
Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS), forced walks to load the bases for Zwak. Zwak took advantage as she hit a bases-clearing double to center field and increase the Saints' lead to 11-3. CSS would add a few more runs in the fifth inning with
Cayla Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Warren, and Johnson each picking up RBIs to make the final score 14-3.
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) earned the win on the mound for the Saints as she pitched all five innings while striking out six batters. Roth took the loss for the Rams.
The Saints will be back at home tomorrow in non-conference action as they take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The first pitch is at noon at Kenwood Field.
