OSKALOOSA, Iowa. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team took on the University of Dubuque in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a split as the Saints won the first game with Dubuque taking the second game.

Game 1
CSS 9, Dubuque 0 F/5

The Saints won the first game 9-0 in five innings thanks to a spark of offense in the last couple innings.

After going scoreless through the first three innings, the Saints' offense started rolling in the fourth inning. Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) started it off with a double to center field and would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt. Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) would then hit an RBI double to bring in McGuiness for the first run of the game. Henning would later reach third on a wild pitch and then get home on an error.

The Saints would not be done as they took it to another level in the next inning. McGuiness started the scoring by smashing a home run to center field. Later on with the bases loaded, Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) singled to center field to bring Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) home. Henning and Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) would score on an error on the next at bat. Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) would keep it going on an RBI single to score Logergren. Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) would finish up the scoring for the game on a double RBI single to make the score 9-0. The Saints defense would hold up and keep Dubuque scoreless to end the game after five innings.

The Saints' offensive attack was very balanced as eight different players had hits in the game. McGuiness led the team with two hits, one of them a home run. Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had two RBIs in the game. Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) got the win for the Saints, pitching a complete game and only allowing two hits while striking out eight Dubuque batters.

Game 2
CSS 2, Dubuque 11

The Saints' success in the first game didn't carry over to the second as they lost by a score of 11-2.

The Saints offense picked up where it left off early though as the first two batters were walked setting up a golden opportunity to get runs on the board. McCabe would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in McGuiness and give the Saints the early 1-0 lead. Dubuque would answer right back though on a lead-off home run to tie it up.

The Dubuque offense kept it going in the next inning scoring four runs on three hits, led by a three-RBI double to center field and the Saints were down 5-1 after three innings. After a scoreless fourth, Dubuque would extend their lead with a three run fifth inning to go up 8-1. The Saints would get one back on a solo home run by Logergren to left field but that would be it as Dubuque would put on another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning to make the final score 11-2.

Mizera would take the loss for the Saints as she pitched two innings giving up a run on one hit and striking out one batter.

The Saints will be back in action in Iowa tomorrow as they take on St. Norbert at noon and Central College at 4 p.m.
