PREVIEW: Home Baseball in March?

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team will hope to have its earliest home opener in program history when it faces Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior Tuesday evening at Wade Stadium.

The Saints opened their season in Florida over Spring Break and went 6-3 on the trip … Two of the three losses came against La Roche College (Pa.), a NCAA Tournament team from a season ago, and the other was against Penn State-Behrend, a 30-win team from last season.
 
Schedule Change: The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday at 4 p.m., but was moved up to Tuesday because of threatening weather coming Tuesday night and Wednesday.
 
A Regular Season Game at Wade: The last time St. Scholastica played a regular season home game at Wade Stadium was against Crown College on April 28, 2012 … CSS has won 31 straight games at Wade Stadium.
 
A Home Game in March: The Saints have not played a home game in March … The earliest known home opening date is April 6, which took place in 2012 and in 1993.
 
Plenty of Offense: The Saints are averaging 6.7 runs per game through their first nine games … CSS scored 60 runs in nine game down in Florida, which is the most on that trip since the 2011 season.
 
Wood Pitching Well: In his first two starts, junior Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) has thrown a pair of complete games and allowed just one run in 16 innings … The two complete games are the first of his career, including his first career shutout vs. Hilbert.
 
Streaks and Trends: Junior Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) has reached base in 28 consecutive games … Junior Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) is currently on a six-game hitting streak … Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) is on a five-game hitting streak.

The Yellowjackets enter their final season in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) as they will joining the Saints in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) … UWS has been picked sixth in the seven-team WIAC this season … Superior returns seven starting position players and four starting pitchers … Senior infielder Sam Holden, senior catcher Alex Quinones and senior pitcher Damian Wiblin were all honorable mention All-WIAC choices a season ago … The Yellowjackets will need to replace Tom Fairbanks who became the first Yellowjacket baseball player to earn All-American status.
