ResultsMINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated Martin Luther College 9-0 Friday night in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals and in doing so, set the program's single-season wins record with its 21st victory.
The previous record of 20 was set last season. The Saints are currently on a program-best 17-match winning streak and have won eight straight matches by a score of 9-0. That is the first time in program history that has occurred.
To start the match in doubles play, the No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-1. The No. 2 team of
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) along with the No. 3 team of
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) both blanked their opponents 8-0.
Moving on to singles action, Lambrecht at No. 3,
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) at No. 4,
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) at No. 5 and
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) at No. 6 all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Stainer came out on top at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-0. The final singles winner was Mack at No. 2 by scores of 6-0, 7-5.
The Saints (21-3) will face the University of Northwestern for the UMAC Tournament championship tomorrow at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
